Lost in Translation

Recently I found a piece about how difficult translation can be. It goes something like this -

Imagine you are talking to a robot
You: Can you get me a glass of water?
Robot: Yes.
... you wait and wait and wait..finally realizing your mistake-
You: Will you get me a glass of water?
Robot: Yes.
... you wait and wait and wait

To ones who still haven't got it, the correct question should have been an order - "Get me a glass of water". A robot will never understand that he is supposed to get a glass of water even when literally you are just asking him if he can get water for you.

Temporary files on Vista

Have you ever been in a situation where you see a flash video on some site and want to download it? .. then you try to find all kinds of software to download flash videos. Well, there is an easy way to do this. When you watch a flash video it gets downloaded to the temporary internet folder. You can just copy the downloaded video from there. The hard part is to locate this folder if you are using Windows Vista. The location of temporary files for Vista is

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5

Try navigating to this folder through explorer. You won't be able to find the folder even if you display hidden files and folders. You have to type the address in the address bar to go to the folder.

GRUB problems

I have Ubuntu and Windows XP installed on my computer. Everything was working fine, when one fine day I suddenly had the inspiration to install a software which would allow me to access Linux partition from Windows. After Googling for it, I did find such a software. Unfortunately, either something went wrong with installation or the software was just plain dumb. Anyway, I ended up messing up my GRUB and wasn't able to boot either Windows or Linux. After much hair-pulling and searching on the net, I found a way to restore GRUB. For the benefit of any other unfortunate beings caught in the same situation here is the way:

Boot using Ubuntu Live CD
Open a terminal
>sudo find /boot/grub/stage1
This will show you the partion where Grub is installed. In my case it was (hd0,8)
>sudo grub
>root (hd0,8)
In your case the partition returned by the previous command
>setup (hd0)
>quit

You are done.Just reboot the computer and your GRUB is back.
